Big Book Sale

Some of you are aware that last weekend I checked out the San Francisco Public Library's annual Big Book Sale. Well, it didn't disappoint. After 3 hours I still felt as though I'd only seen a tiny portion of what there was on sale. Accrdingly, I brought home a ridiculous amount of books. In case you're curious, here they are. Like the copy of Knut Hamsun's HUNGER...Excellent choice. Which year and and publisher is that copy - my eyes are failing me?

Great choices -- although I can only truly vouch for the Trevor and Cheever. I rid my house of 100 books last week, either through trade or library donation. Know what? The resale shop wouldn't take Underworld and I couldn't make myself give it away.

Looks like the same copy of Hunger that I have--the Robert Bly translation, with an intro by Isaac Bashevis Singer. FSG, not sure of the year.

And Laxness and Hemon too--exquisite taste, Scott.

And then there's my pile. Jesus.

BTW, you don't EVER want to go to one of these things with me if you want to come home with a modest pile. I think Scott and Tito can both vouch for that. :)

Don't bother with Rules of Attraction. I'm no fan of Ellis, but a friend of mine worships the guy's work found it laughably bad.

how fun to look at photos. Curiously, you have some of the books I had to give away before I went overseas. I wonder if they ended up in SF.

Every March Houston has a similar grandiose booksale. If you recall, Houston ranked low on the Literary-o-meter survey a few months ago, so typically you don't have to fight as hard for the good stuff.

Both Kundera novels are ok, but definitely not his best. (Try Joke or Book of Laughter and Forgetting).

Ahh, I see you've succumbed to CompleteStoryitis, the tendency to snatch a book that says "Complete Stories of" or "collected stories of." I recently bought 500+ page Collected Stories of Peter Taylor, an author I'd never heard of. At 75 cents plus $1.49 for shipping (if you purchase more than one books from the same seller), how can you resist?

Hey Robert:

Blame Ed for the Ellis. He told me it would only take a day or 2 at most & then I'd be able to at least be acquainted with the guy's works.

Acutally, William Trevor is someone I've been checking for. Same for Robert Musil. So in this case, the Colelcted Works/Stories hoppily coincided with stuff I've been looking for.

Blame me for the Hansun too then, while you're at it. :)

How's this for overenthusiasm: William Trevor is the greatest short story writer alive, and there is not one bad story in that vast book.
